Pro tip: my buddy told me to skip filler arcs on my first watch and I basically ruined One Piece for myself
My coworker Dan has been on me for a year to start One Piece and I finally caved back in March. He said just look up a filler guide and skip anything that isn't canon or you'll never catch up, so I did that and blew through like 400 episodes in two months. Problem is I have no idea who half these side characters are now and when the crew references something from a skipped arc I'm totally lost at the bar while everyone else is laughing. Turns out those "boring" episodes were doing a lot of the work. Anyone got a better way to handle a long show on a first watch, or did I just screw myself permanently here?
Skipping filler is still the right call for most people. Your problem isnt the guide, it's that you went way too fast. 400 episodes in two months is like 6 or 7 a day, of course stuff isnt gonna stick when you watch it like that. The folks at the bar laughing probably watched the same 400 episodes over two or three years, not two months, so they had time to let it soak in. Slow down, watch a few a week, and you'll remember the side characters just fine. You didnt screw yourself up forever either, you can always go back and watch the skipped arcs later, they arent going anywhere.
