That random guy at the con told me to watch Kaiji and I'm glad I listened
He just handed me a burned DVD-R outside the dealer room in 2016, said trust me this is better than Squid Game, and now I've rewatched it every year since.

The burned DVD-R thing is such a specific 2016 con experience, I love it. But I gotta ask, were you more hooked by the rock paper scissors mind games or the sheer stress of the pachinko machine arc? I feel like people either bounce off the first game or get completely obsessed with how far they can stretch a single gamble. For me it was the way the narrator talks you through every single thought, like you're getting a live sports commentary on your own anxiety.

Honestly, I used to roll my eyes at folks who said the narration was the best part. I thought they were just being dramatic. But you nailed it here, that live sports commentary on your own anxiety is exactly what it feels like. My first playthrough I was so focused on the stress of the pachinko machine I missed half the story. Now I realize that voice in your ear is what makes every single gamble feel like it matters way more than it should.
