Gave up on my thermal camera for a $5 temp gun, never looking back
Been fighting a fridge compressor issue for weeks, could see the hot spot on the thermal but couldnt tell if it was normal. Picked up a cheap temp gun at the supply house in Phoenix and checked the discharge line against the spec sheet. Turned out the thermal was showing me a red blob but the temp gun showed 190F when it shoulda been 155F. That one number finally convinced me to stop guessing and replace the start relay. Has anyone else found the old school tools work better than the fancy ones?

Honestly, that temp gun is the most used tool in my bag now. I had a similar deal with a furnace limit switch, the thermal showed a weird pattern but the gun gave me the exact 165F reading to know it was tripping early. Sometimes you just need one solid number instead of a pretty picture to make the call.
