Mom's old Tupperware story made me rethink how we date finds

My mom was telling me about her 1970s Tupperware collection and how she can trace each piece to a specific party or garage sale, which got me thinking about how we treat provenance in digs. She remembered a bowl she bought in 1983 in Toledo for $3, and that level of personal recall threw me off when compared to some site reports that just say 'layer 4, undated'. I asked myself, do we lose the human thread by focusing only on stratigraphy, and should we be interviewing locals more like oral historians? Has anyone else had a conversation that made them question their field notes?
