Pro tip: a friend told me my brushes were dying from caked-on paint
She said to use baby oil to break down dried acrylic on bristles, and I tried it on a flat brush I'd written off. Worked way better than soap, has anyone else tested this trick on synthetic brushes?

Yeah but @norag55 you gotta be careful with olive oil cause it can go rancid and smell weird after a while. Baby oil is just mineral oil with some fragrance so it stays stable and doesn't gum up your brushes. I tried cooking oil once and regretted it SO much when my brushes started smelling like last week's salad dressing. For real though the baby oil trick is a lifesaver on synthetic bristles, I've saved like four brushes I was about to toss. Just make sure you wash them with dish soap after to get all the oil out or your next painting session will be a greasy nightmare.

read somewhere that olive oil works too but baby oil is probably less greasy. gonna try this on my crusty old brushes later.
