Pro tip: I stopped buying new brushes every 3 months after a bin at the Cleveland swap changed my mind
I used to grab a fresh 4 pack of synthetic brushes at the art store every 3 months or so because mine always turned into crusty splayed messes, and it was eating like $25 a pop. Then at a supply swap in Cleveland last fall, this woman handed me a ziplock of her old brushes, all stiff and stained, and told me to just wash them with bar soap and reshape them while damp. I figured she was full of it, but I gave it a shot on 6 ratty brushes I almost tossed, and 5 of them came back fine after drying bristle down in a jar. Now I haven't bought a new brush in 9 months and I've swapped away my extra tubes for a nice filbert and a flat I actually like. The crazy part is how many barely used brushes I see people giving away because they don't know this. What's your go to soap or method for saving dead brushes?
