TIL the free table at my local art guild's spring clean-out in Akron changed how I buy paint
I went to the Akron Art Guild's spring supply clean-out last Saturday mostly to drop off some old brushes I never use, and there was a folding table by the door piled with half-used paint tubes that members just left for anyone. I almost walked past it, but an older woman next to me picked up a tube of burnt sienna that was maybe a third full and said, why would I pay $9 for a fresh one when this will last me a whole landscape class. That got me thinking about how much paint I waste by always wanting full tubes, so I took a handful of the ones that still squeezed fine and started my sketchbook that night. I ended up finishing a full page of color studies with paint that would've gone in the trash by Sunday, and honestly the mixes came out better than some I've done with new tubes because I stopped being precious about it. Now I keep a little box of leftovers on my shelf and grab from it first before opening anything fresh. It's only been a few days but I've already gone through two tubes that were sitting ignored for a year. Has anyone else had luck with a swap table at a guild or community center event like this, and did you find it actually cut down what you buy new?
