My uncle told me to knock on the pump twice before trusting it

My uncle who ran a station in Amarillo for 30 years told me always give the gas pump handle two taps before you start, because the meter sometimes keeps ticking after the auto shutoff clicks. I blew it off for years until my last fill charged me 14 cents extra on a 9 gallon tank. Now I'm wondering how many other little habits like that I waved off, what's the one tip you got that sounded dumb but turned out true?
