Ditched my old phone mount for a counterweight bar, way better framing
Used to balance my DSLR on a ball head for wide field shots. Always fiddling with the lock ring, the camera would drift between exposures. Switched to a simple dovetail bar with a sliding counterweight after three ruined star trails in Joshua Tree last October. Now I can frame the Milky Way core and leave it alone for 20 minutes without touching anything. The clincher was watching a guy at a star party nail a 5 minute exposure with the same setup. Sure it weighs more in the bag, but the consistency beats the convenience. Anyone else drop ball heads for a balanced bar on their tripod?

...and that's exactly what my buddy realized out in the Badlands last fall. He spent a whole night fighting his gimbal head, every time he framed a shot the lock would slip just enough to mess with his tracking. Finally he just gave up, shoved a rock under the camera body and taped a weight to the lens hood. Worked better than the $200 head. Next trip he showed up with the same dovetail bar setup you're talking about and hasn't looked back.
