Figured out a no-start on a 2008 Ranger in 20 minutes with a $12 test light
Had a 2008 Ranger towed in last Tuesday with a crank but no start, and the owner swore it was the fuel pump because his buddy told him so. My scan tool showed no RPM signal while cranking, so instead of pulling the bed I grabbed my old $12 test light and back probed the crank sensor connector. Turned out the signal wire had rubbed through against a bracket behind the intake, just enough to short to ground and kill the pulse. I was ready to sell him a pump, and the real fix was a piece of harness tape and a zip tie. What got me was how fast a cheap light beat the parts cannon, ten minutes of poking versus an afternoon of guessing. I still feel a little dumb about how close I came to just ordering the pump on his say so. Has anyone else had a customer diagnosis point them the wrong way, and how do you break it to them without sounding like a know it all?
