Just realized I was carrying a map I couldn't read for 2 summers
Last month in the Wind River Range, I pulled out my fold-out topo and realized the contour lines meant nothing to me after dark. I'd been using GPS tracks from a friend's file, so I never learned to match the ridges to the paper. A guy at the trailhead pointed out I was holding the map upside down, which was half the problem. Now I'm forcing myself to plan one solo trip with zero phone service, just the paper and a compass. Has anyone else had a moment where they faked it on navigation and it finally caught up with them?
