Rant: I carried 2 liters of water on the Eagle Rock loop and it cost me the best campsite
I was convinced I needed to haul a full 2 liters on a 3 day stretch in the Ouachitas last month because the spring report looked sketchy. Got to this perfect flat spot above the creek at 4pm and my pack was so heavy I just dropped and didn't push the extra half mile to the ridge site everyone talks about. Turned out the spring was running fine and I dumped half my water at lunch the next day to save weight. So I basically carried dead weight and missed the view. I mean I get being safe but the ranger at the trailhead even told me the flow was up. How do you all decide how much water to trust a source report on? Do you just top off at every crossing and stop planning around the worst case?
