Can we talk about the 3 square feet per chicken thing being way off?
So I got a copy of an old extension guide from my county agent here in Iowa and it says 3 to 4 square feet per bird inside the coop. My dad always told me 2 was fine and I ran 2 for a long while with no problems. But the guide breaks it down by breed and says heavy breeds like my Buff Orpingtons really want closer to 4, plus 10 square feet in the run. What got me was the part about winter, it said crowded birds get frostbite on their combs way easier because of the moisture from their breath. I measured my coop out and I was at 2.6 per bird, so I added on a 3 foot lean-to section over the weekend. Curious what square footage you all run and if you noticed a difference when you gave them more room.
