Rant: that $28 automatic coop door was the best money I ever threw at this hobby
I put off buying one for almost a year because it felt like a silly gadget for lazy people. My hens kept getting up at 5am in the summer and I was out there in my pajamas every single morning trying to beat them to the run. Then in March I grabbed a basic solar powered door for $28 from a farm supply place in Peoria and it changed my whole routine. It opens right at sunrise and shuts about 20 minutes after dark, and I haven't had a single bird locked out or stuck inside since then. Honestly the only downside is I miss the quiet coffee time on the porch with them. Does anyone here run one without a backup battery, or am I playing with fire?
