My neighbor insisted I needed a $400 telescope to see Jupiter's moons from my deck in Portland
I proved him wrong last night by clearly spotting them with my old $50 pair of 10x50 binoculars and a steady chair, so why do people think you need fancy gear to start?

Honestly, people get stuck on specs and forget about skill and conditions. Your neighbor probably looked at Jupiter through city haze once with shaky hands and blamed his gear. A calm night with decent binoculars beats a fancy scope on a bad night any day.

Maybe your neighbor just wanted to share his own expensive hobby with you.

I mean it's kind of like when someone tries to get you into their favorite TV show or restaurant. People just want to share what they're excited about, even if it doesn't land. Maybe we all do it more than we realize.
