Appreciation post: the guy at the Portland nursery who told me my basil was drowning
I had been watering my basil every morning for about two months and could not figure out why it kept going yellow and sad on me. Last Saturday I brought a leaf to the nursery on SE Division and this older guy took one look at my pot and said my soil was staying wet and the roots were rotting. He had me stick my finger two inches down before watering, and honestly it was soaked even on days I skipped. I switched to watering every third day, moved the pot back from the railing so it gets less direct afternoon sun, and added a cheap $6 moisture meter. Two weeks in and there are new leaves coming in and the yellowing stopped. Has anyone else had a plant that was getting too much water instead of too little, and how did you figure it out?
