I was sure balcony gardening needed full sun, but my shady spot proves otherwise.

Actually a lot of folks get that mixed up. Plenty of plants really do need that direct sun, like tomatoes and peppers. But shady spots are perfect for things like lettuce, spinach, and some herbs. Just gotta check the plant tags for "partial shade" or "full shade" labels.

Learned that the hard way... killed three basil plants before I figured out my "sunny" spot gets about two hours of light.
