Lost $60 on a fancy self-watering planter that rotted my basil

Last spring I bought one of those self-watering containers with the wicking system from a garden shop downtown, figured it would save me time. Instead the reservoir kept the soil too wet and my basil roots turned to mush within a few weeks. Has anyone else had better luck with these, or should I just stick to regular pots with drainage holes?
