My grandpa's balcony garden used just 3 hanging baskets and fed him for years...
I was going through old photos and found a picture of my grandpa's balcony from 1982. He had three wire baskets lined with moss, growing cherry tomatoes, pole beans, and strawberries in maybe 2 square feet total. That little setup produced more than my whole container garden does now... has anyone else tried the old-school basket method?

That 1982 setup sounds incredible... my grandma had the exact same wire baskets with moss liners back then. One thing I gotta gently point out though, pole beans in a hanging basket? They usually need a trellis or something to climb up, not just hang down. She probably used bush beans instead, those stay compact and drape over the sides real nice. I still use that old moss method for strawberries and trailing cherry tomatoes, and it works better than any modern plastic pot I've tried. The moss keeps the moisture even and the roots don't get as hot as they do in dark containers.

Exact same here - bush beans in baskets always work.
