Went from hating my tiny balcony to growing actual food in it

I used to think my 3x4 foot balcony was way too small for anything but maybe one sad pot of basil. Then I tried a $12 vertical hanging planter from a local shop in Seattle and stacked it with lettuce and cherry tomatoes. The trick was using self-watering inserts so I don't have to water every 2 hours in summer heat. Has anyone else found a weird small-space hack that totally changed your growing game?

Your AZ sun sounds brutal, have you tried reflective mylar sheeting behind the plants to bounce light away?

Wait you found SELF-WATERING inserts small enough for a vertical hanging planter? That's wild I didn't even know those existed for that setup. I've been killing my balcony plants for TWO years because I forget to water them for like a day and the sun just fries everything. I live in Arizona so my balcony turns into an oven by noon and I gave up on tomatoes thinking they'd just shrivel up. Your post is giving me hope though maybe I need to actually hunt down one of those inserts and try again with a spot that gets partial shade.
