Can we talk about how GOG beat out my old disc pile for playing 20 year old games?
I have a shoebox full of old PC discs from the 90s and early 2000s that I kept telling myself was the real way to play these games. Two months ago I gave up fighting with a scratched copy of Fallout 2 that kept crashing on my Windows 10 setup, so I grabbed it on GOG for $3 during a sale instead. The difference was night and day. No disc swapping, no hunting down patches on some random forum from 2004, no weird sound card errors, it just started up and ran. I also picked up Heroes of Might and Magic 3 for like $2.50 and it worked right away, which never happened with my old CD. I still love the feel of a physical box on the shelf, but for actually playing the games I've switched sides. Has anyone else made this jump, and are there certain old titles where the disc version is still the way to go?
Feel you on the disc pile struggle, I've got a binder full of old CDs that I swore I'd keep using forever, and half of them are so scratched they sound like a lawnmower when the drive spins up. The patch hunting thing is what finally broke me too, spending an hour digging through dead forums just to find a fix that may or may not work. There are a few cases where I still keep the disc around though, mostly for games that had cool manuals or maps packed in, since GOG can't really give you that part. But yeah, for actually playing the thing instead of just staring at the box, it's hard to argue with a cheap download that just works.
