Vent: my $40 clamp light beat my $300 desk lamp setup

I used to stack 3 clamp lights with diffusers and a Hue strip for a year, thinking more sources meant better lighting for streams and photos. After a buddy visited last Tuesday and pointed out my shadow mess on the wall, I stripped it down to one cheap aluminum clamp light aimed at the ceiling. Anyone else find that less gear actually fixed their battlestation glow, or am I just lucky with my room shape?
