I skipped the big beach cleanup day for a small solo one, and a guy in knee-high boots changed my mind
For a couple of seasons I figured the big organized cleanup days were the only effort that counted. Then I overheard a volunteer at the Ocean Beach sign-in table say something I keep chewing on: "The crew day gets the headlines, but a bag every Tuesday is what actually keeps the sand clean." He had a point, because the big events here pull maybe 300 people twice a season, while the litter shows up daily. So I started doing 20 minutes solo on Tuesday mornings with a grabber and a 5 gallon bucket, and in 6 weeks I've hauled off about 9 pounds of bottle caps, straws, and foam bits. It is not glamorous, but the small patch south of the pier looks better than it did after the April crew day. Do any of you keep a regular solo route, and if so, which stretch do you take?
