Shoutout to the guy at Bend Bike Hub who named my mystery rattle "the ghost bell"
Two weeks ago I pulled a customer's commuter into the stand at our shop in Bend and there was this faint ding happening every few pedal strokes. I chased it for 40 minutes, swapped the rear wheel, checked every spoke, and the guy next to me says, "that's the ghost bell, it lives in the seat tube." He was right, some joker had dropped a tiny brass bell down the tube, probably at the factory in 2019, and it had been ringing around in there for who knows how long. Has anyone else found weird stuff dropped inside a frame, and did you keep it or toss it?
Wait, a tiny brass bell was just hanging out in his seat tube for like five years? That is wild to me. Not even rattling enough for him to notice until now, just quietly dinging away on every bump like a little haunted house. I would be dying to know if the factory worker who dropped it got in trouble or if it was on purpose as some kind of joke. A bell is such a weird thing to find too, like at least a bell has a purpose, but how did nobody catch him with it? I would've kept it for sure, that's a good luck charm now.
