TIL I had my spoke tension gauge set wrong for 3 months
Last Tuesday I was building a rear wheel for a customer's commuter and couldn't figure out why every wheel felt mushy on the road even though the gauge read 110 kgf, until an old timer at the shop in Portland glanced at my Park Tool TM-1 and said the conversion chart I'd been using was for a different spoke gauge. Turns out I'd been tensioning 14 gauge spokes to the 15 gauge numbers, so everything was about 20% under where it should be. How do you all keep your tension charts straight when you've got a mix of spoke sizes on the bench?
