TIL that cheap chain lube test I laughed at at the shop in Dayton was right
So a couple of the older guys at the shop in Dayton kept going on about how keeping your chain just barely wet beats soaking it, and I rolled my eyes for months because that felt like a nothing tip. Then a customer brought back a bike after 900 miles on a wet spring of riding and his chain was still at 0.5 on the checker while my own soaked chain setup was shot by 600. I pulled my chain off that Saturday and the pins were dry in the middle even after a full soak, which is when it clicked for me that the lube has to get inside the rollers, not sit on the outside. I switched to two drops per link, wiped it down after, and the chain on my commuter runs way quieter now. I'm not saying the expensive bottles are junk, but I ate my words on the application thing. Any of you run a drip bottle with a needle tip or do you just use a rag and a steady hand?
