After confusing two characters, I now pace my binge-watching

I need to warn you about rushing through shows without breaks. I totally mixed up two main characters in a political drama because I binged it all in one night. Now I make a rule to watch just two episodes at a time. This lets my brain process the story and remember who is who. For example, with a show like 'The Crown', taking pauses helped me follow the timeline better. Try setting a limit to avoid losing track of the plot. It really makes the whole experience more satisfying and clear.

See this same thing happen when I try to power through a dense book or a complicated work task. My brain just glazes over the important details if I don't take breathers. It's like our minds need white space to sort information, same as you described with TV characters. I've started applying short breaks to everything from emails to DIY projects, and it cuts down on dumb mistakes. Basically, slowing our roll lets us actually digest what's in front of us instead of just consuming it. Your two-episode rule is smart because it forces that pause we all need.

Why does it feel like our brains are just fancy computers running too many tabs at once? Like you said, taking a break is basically control-alt-delete for the mind. It's kinda sad we need a "rule" to remind us not to binge everything until our eyes cross. Maybe evolution should've given us better attention spans instead of the ability to worry about everything.

Wait, doesn't worry help form memories though, @barbara_adams?
