Do window films actually work or did I get lucky with that finch?

Last Tuesday in Portland, a house finch smacked into my living room window so hard I heard the thud from the kitchen. I'd put up those static cling decals from Home Depot the week before, but the bird hit a gap about 4 inches wide between them. It staggered for a bit, then flew off after maybe 2 minutes. So here's the thing: if the decals only work when they're spaced close enough to cover every angle, are they really a solution or just a false sense of security? Anyone else tested different spacing and found a sweet spot that stopped strikes for real?

Birds hit windows all the time. Happens to everyone. That finch flew off after two minutes, so it was fine. Probably just stunned, not dead. All this careful measuring and gap testing sounds like a lot of work for something that might not even be a real problem. Cats are a bigger danger to birds than windows anyway. You put decals up, that's more than most people do. Good enough.
