A guy at a hammer-in made me question my whole anvil stand
Last month at a hammer-in near Columbus, an old farrier watched me beat on a piece of 1 inch round stock and said my stand was robbing me of all my rebound. He had this beat up anvil sitting on a stump with a leather strap wrapped around it, nothing fancy, and he let me take a few swings. I always thought heavier was better, I had a solid steel tripod I bolted together for $300 in scrap, but his setup felt way more solid under the hammer. It hit different because he showed me the ring difference with a ball bearing drop, night and day. Has anyone else switched from a welded stand to a simple wooden stump and felt a real difference in their blows?
