I finally figured out why my tongs kept twisting on round stock
After 3 months of fighting my tongs on 1 inch round bar, I tried grinding a slight hollow into the jaws instead of keeping them flat. It grabbed way better and stopped the workpiece from rolling sideways mid-hit. Has anyone else tried hollowing their tong jaws, or do you just rely on different bite patterns?

Bought my first pair of proper blacksmithing tongs back in '09 from a guy at a flea market in Ohio. He swore by doing exactly what you just described, but he also said the hollow needs to be cut with the stock hot so you get the exact curve. I tried it once with a cold chisel and it just bounced off. Spent two hours that day re-shaping a piece of rebar into a crude drift punch instead. The tongs still sit in my drawer, half-gutted, waiting for me to get brave again. Your post might just be the kick I needed to finish that job.
