I tried tightening tube expanders to 90% torque and got leaky joints every time
Last month on a waterwall job in Hammond I had my guys run the expanders to about 90% of the torque spec because the tubes felt snug and I figured it would save time. Pulled the hydro test and got weeping at 11 of the 40 joints, all on the bottom row. What I figured out is the rollers need that last bit of turn to flow the metal into the groove, and stopping short leaves tiny gaps you can't see. Went back to full torque on the redo and every joint held dry. Anybody here ever tried a torque multiplier on a big tube count to speed it up without wrecking the seal?
