Warning: That discount PVA from the craft store ruined 4 book cloth covers in 3 days
I bought a big jug of PVA glue on sale back in June because my usual supplier was backordered. The label said archival safe, pH neutral, all that. Looked fine out of the bottle, smelled fine even. Bound two journals and a photo album with it last Sunday. By Wednesday, the book cloth was peeling off the boards like it was never stuck down. Corners lifting, spine fabric sagging. I checked the bottle again and noticed it was their 'craft' line, not the bookbinding grade. The solids content has to be lower because it just evaporated weird. I already cut new boards and I'm redoing all four pieces this weekend with proper adhesive. Anyone else get burned by a cheaper glue swap? What brand do you stick with for cloth to board?
