Lime mortar on a 1920s row house changed my mix game

Did a repoint job last month on a row house in Baltimore. The owner insisted on lime mortar, not the Portland mix I always used. First two passes cracked bad because I treated it like regular mortar. Third try I let it cure slower, kept it damp for 5 days. That stuff is way softer but it moves with the old brick. Now I'm wondering, how many of you switch mixes for older buildings or just always go modern? What's your rule on when to use lime?
