Old timer told me to wet my bricks, I thought he was crazy
Last spring a retired mason named Frank stopped by my job site in Columbus and watched me lay a course of dry brick. He said I was drawing moisture out of the mortar too fast and it would weaken the bond. I ignored him for two days, then noticed hairline cracks forming on the third course. I tore it out, soaked the brick in a bucket for five minutes before laying, and the mortar stayed workable way longer. Has anyone else fought the urge to skip this step when the weather is warm?
