Found a $15 brass lamp at a church rummage sale in Tulsa last Saturday, but the shade is busted
I hit up a church rummage sale over in Tulsa last Saturday morning and grabbed this heavy little brass table lamp for $15. It cleaned up nice with some ketchup and a rag, which I saw someone mention on here months ago. Problem is the shade is shredded and a new one at the store costs more than the lamp. Should I just grab a plain cheap shade and call it done, or is there a way to make a thrifted shade look less sad? Also how do I tell if this thing is actually brass and not just gold paint?

I did the same thing last spring with a $12 brass lamp from a flea market and the shade looked like a cat got to it. What worked for me was grabbing a cheap plain shade at Goodwill for $3 and then wrapping the top and bottom rims with some jute twine I already had in the garage. Took maybe 20 minutes with hot glue and it hides the ugly edges while making it look on purpose. You could also try fabric spray paint if the shade is just stained, but if it's torn up bad, skip it. For the brass test, stick a magnet on it. If it grabs, it's not real brass, just plated or painted steel. Also rub a spot with vinegar and salt, real brass will brighten up and cheap paint will start flaking.
