Update: My neighbor in Cleveland told me to stop buying chicken breast and it cut my grocery bill by $60 a week
I was complaining to my neighbor Dave last month about how I spend $140 a week on groceries for just me and my wife. He said I was wasting money buying boneless skinless breast at $4.99 a pound when whole chickens go on sale for 89 cents a pound at the West Side Market. I tried it for two weeks and roasted two birds on Sunday, then used the meat for tacos, soup, and sandwiches all week. The carcasses went in a pot with onion scraps and now I get 6 cups of stock for free instead of paying $3 a carton. My bill went from $140 to $80 and I actually eat better now. Has anyone else made the switch to whole birds, and what do you do with the leftover fat?
