Picked the overnight bus from Bangkok to Chiang Mai over a flight

It was a tough call between a cheap $45 flight and a $15 overnight bus. I went with the bus to save cash for more street food. The seats reclined pretty far and they gave us a blanket and a snack. I saved about $30 and woke up already in the city center. Anyone have other good overnight transport tips in Southeast Asia?

A blanket and a snack for a fifteen dollar overnight trip is wild. I did a similar bus in Vietnam once and all we got was a half bottle of warm water. Your deal sounds almost too good.

I always booked the flight too, thinking the bus would be a rough night. Then I took the overnight train from Surat Thani to Bangkok. For twenty bucks, I got a real bunk bed with a curtain, a clean sheet, and a plug for my phone. Waking up to see the sunrise over the rice fields made the whole trip. Sometimes the slow way is the better way.

Hold up, they gave you a blanket and a snack? For fifteen bucks? That's insane. I've done a few of those overnight trips and you're lucky if the bus even shows up, let alone gives you anything. A blanket is like first class treatment.
