Showerthought: I stopped buying travel insurance for cheap trips and it backfired in a dumb way
Everyone in this community says skip the $25 travel insurance on short budget trips and just eat the risk, so I did that for a $180 weekend trip to San Antonio last spring. My flight got delayed 14 hours and I ended up paying $140 for a last minute hotel near the airport plus $60 in food I had not planned for, which was almost as much as the whole trip. I always assumed insurance was a scam for small trips, but doing the math after the fact, a $25 policy would have covered most of that. Now I want to know if anyone here has a rule for when a trip is cheap enough to skip coverage, or do you just buy it every time no matter what?
