Ten strip mall hostels in Phoenix now require a $50 key card deposit, here's how I dodged it
Got burned at the Desert Palm Hostel last Tuesday when they hit me with that deposit at check-in. I only had 80 bucks on me for a 5 night stay. The clerk told me to bring back a receipt from the Circle K down the road proving I bought their prepaid card. That worked, but the real trick is asking for a manager before 9 am. After 3 tries at different spots, one manager at the Red Roof Annex let me leave my driver's license instead. Anyone else run into this weird deposit rule lately?

Watched my buddy Marcus get hit with this at the Blue Mirage last month. He straight up had no cash left after the Uber, so he slid his expired gym membership card across the counter and told them it was his bank card. The clerk barely looked at it, swiped it through the reader, and handed it back. He got his room key and never saw that deposit charge again, mostly because there was no money on it to charge. I was dying laughing in the lobby the whole time. Worst case they keep a useless card, best case you save 50 bucks for tacos.
