3 years ago I stopped buying lunch at work and my wallet is still thanking me
Three years ago I was spending $11 a day at the deli near my job in Charlotte, which came out to about $2,700 a year just for sandwiches and chips. I started packing leftovers from dinner every single night and put that $11 into a jar every evening instead, and after 12 months I had enough for a full set of new tires plus an emergency fund. Has anyone else done the math on their own lunch habit, and what did you actually do with the money you saved?
The part about putting that $11 into a jar every evening is what makes this work, because most people save money in their head and then it just vanishes into the next thing. If you actually move it somewhere separate, even a plain jar, you can't pretend it's still there to spend. I did the same thing with my coffee stop, $4.50 every morning, and after two years it paid for a used kayak and the roof rack to carry it. The trick is picking a number you won't miss daily, then letting the pile grow somewhere you can see it.
