Had 14 letters on a bumper sticker last week and they all looked crowded

I was working on a design for a local landscaping company near Denver and tried to fit a phone number on a standard bumper sticker. After printing three test strips, the numbers blurred together and were barely readable from 10 feet away. Has anyone found a good rule for max character count on a typical bumper sticker without losing legibility?

Oh man, that's rough. I feel your pain - phone numbers on bumper stickers are the worst to make readable.

Yeah, the font thing is such a pain. I swear some designers never actually try to read their own stickers from a car length away. @coleman.jamie you're spot on, phone numbers are the worst because one wrong squiggle and it's a dead number. And forget it if they use a cursive script, that's just asking for trouble. My rule of thumb is if I have to squint, it's a fail.
