Switched from pocket screws to dowels on a face frame job in Rochester and the difference was night and day
I built a 36 inch vanity face frame last month using dowels instead of my usual Kreg pocket screws, and the joints came out way flatter with no creep at all. Pocket screws always pulled things slightly out of alignment on wider stiles, so I was constantly fighting the clamps. The dowel joints also took stain more evenly since there were no screw heads to plug. Anybody here made the full switch or do you still keep pocket screws around for certain jobs?

Buddy of mine runs a cabinet shop up near Duluth and he did the same thing last year. Swore by pocket screws for 15 years then tried dowels on a run of oak face frames and would not shut up about it for weeks. Said the stiles stayed dead flat, no creep, no clamp fight. He keeps the Kreg jig around but only pulls it out for quick shop cabinets or when he is working alone and needs a hand. For anything that gets stain he is all dowels now. Only gripe was the up front cost of a good dowel jig and the extra time lining up holes.
