Fiber or copper for a 400 foot run, I made the wrong call

Got a rural house job out near Salem last month, they wanted a garage camera set up and the distance was right at 400 feet from the main junction. I went with RG6 coax because it was already on the truck and cheaper, but the signal loss was brutal, static on every channel by the time it hit the DVR. Ran back out there yesterday and swapped to a fiber drop with media converters, cost me an extra $180 and two trips, but now the picture is clean. Anyone else tried to push copper past 300 feet and regretted it, or do you just always spec fiber for long haul runs?
