Shoutout to the old timer who caught my lens cleaning mistake

I spent like 2 years using lens cleaning fluid straight on the glass, thinking I was being thorough. An old repair guy at a swap meet in Portland saw me doing it and said "you're just pushing grit around, pal." Now I blow dust off first with a blower, and my cleanings actually work. Anyone else have a basic step they skipped for way too long?

2 years with a bad habit is pretty normal honestly.

My dad actually taught me to clean records the same way back in the 90s always blew them off first with a microfiber cloth before putting any liquid on them. Took me until I was 25 to realize he wasn't just being fussy he was right about avoiding scratches. @alice_harris35 is spot on about bad habits sticking around I still catch myself pressing the shutter button too hard sometimes from my early film days. Its funny how those little things we learn wrong can mess up our results for years without us knowing. Did you ever figure out if the swap meet guy had a name or a shop?
