Finally realized my tent stakes were working against me
After 5 years of camping I always just jammed my stakes in at whatever angle felt right on that rocky soil up near Flagstaff. Last weekend a guy walked by my site and asked why I was fighting the ground with stakes pointed downhill instead of 45 degrees away from the tent. Has anyone else had that 'oh duh' moment with something so basic?

You know, I actually disagree with that guy. Ive been camping for 12 years up in the White Mountains and I always stake at a shallow angle pointing toward the tent. The ground is so loose and crumbly up there that a deep 45 degree angle just pulls right out in the first gust. Pointing toward the tent lets me get the stake deeper into the few solid spots of dirt, and the pull is straight up the shaft instead of trying to lever it sideways. My tent has never blown away, so maybe the "rules" are overrated.

Pointing toward the tent" is just like how I hang my measuring spoons, @masondixon. Sometimes you gotta break the rules.
