Was dead set against a sleeping pad for 10 years until my back gave out at Panther Creek
I spent a decade calling pads overpriced crutches for people who never learned to sleep on the ground. Then last month at Panther Creek in the Ozarks I woke up on night two with my left hip screaming and a knot in my low back so bad I couldn't stand up straight to make coffee. I spent an hour hunched over the fire pit feeling sorry for myself while my buddy slept until 9 on a 20 dollar foam pad he picked up at a surplus store. He didn't say a word, just handed me his spare on night three and I slept seven hours straight for the first time in years. What got me was that it wasn't some 200 dollar air mattress, just a plain closed cell pad. I ordered one the day I got home and now I feel like a fool for all those nights I woke up stiff and told myself that was just part of camping. Anyone got a foam pad that holds up past two seasons, because my buddy's is already starting to flake at the edges?
