Warning: I stacked heavy boxes on bare concrete in my garage for 3 weeks and the bottom ones turned to mush
Heads up for anyone storing their box stash in a garage or basement, the ground will wreck them faster than you think. I kept about 15 flattened Amazon and U-Haul boxes stacked on my garage floor in Tucson for 3 weeks before I pulled them out to build a play fort, and the bottom 4 were soft, warped, and smelling like mildew. Concrete pulls moisture up and a stack traps it, so the whole pile sweats underneath without you ever seeing it. Now I set everything on a cheap wood pallet I grabbed free behind a store, and nothing has gone bad in 6 months. Anyone got a better trick for keeping a stash dry in a damp garage?
The concrete thing is real but what got you was probably the temperature swings more than the moisture alone. Tucson garages can hit 100+ in the day and drop hard at night, and every time that air cools down the water in it has to go somewhere, so it lands on whatever is sitting there. A pallet helps because air moves under the stack, but if you really want to stop it, cover the whole pile with something breathable on top and leave the sides open, because trapping air around cardboard is just as bad as trapping it under. Also flip the stack every couple weeks if you can, the bottom layer is always the one that eats it first.
