A supervisor in 2018 told me to network more and I ignored it
Back in 2018, my boss at a small marketing firm in Austin told me to go to at least one industry meetup a month. I thought it was a waste of time and kept skipping them. Last year when I needed a new job, almost every lead came from people I met at those events, and I had to start from zero. Has anyone else skipped advice like that and later realized how right they were?

Oh man, I totally feel this. I had a mentor tell me to start building connections in my field back in 2015 and I blew it off thinking I'd just figure it out later. Fast forward to 2022 and I was scrambling, wishing I had listened. Did you ever go back to those meetups after you realized?

Wait, is that really a bad thing though? I feel like forcing yourself to network early can backfire, you just end up with a bunch of shallow contacts who don't actually care. I'd rather wait until I actually need something than waste time at awkward meetups lol.
