Warning: my 401k hit $50k last week and I almost didn't notice because I was chasing a $2 raise
I check my retirement account about as often as I clean the truck, so when I logged in last Tuesday and saw $50,312.44 sitting there I just stared at it. Seven years of putting in 6% at my old job in Fort Wayne got me there, and the last two years of 10% at the new shop did the rest. What got me was I spent most of last month stressing over a $2 an hour raise that works out to maybe $4k a year before taxes. The 401k number moved more than that in a good quarter without me doing anything. I still want the raise, don't get me wrong, but it put the paycheck fight in a different light. How often do you all actually look at your balance, and did it ever make you rethink what you were fighting for at work?
