PSA: stop sanding pine with 220 grit before stain, I switched to 150 and got way better color
I used to finish every pine shelf and cabinet with 220 grit because a guy at a shop in Dayton told me it made the wood feel like glass. After 20 years of blotchy stain on about 30 jobs, I tried stopping at 150 with a quick 180 pass by hand, and the color went on even for the first time. The burnished surface from 220 was basically sealing the grain shut, so the stain sat on top instead of soaking in, and it looked like a toddler with a marker did it. My minwax can even says 150 on it in tiny print I never noticed. Has anyone else had better luck with 150, or is it just the pine around here that hates being over sanded?
